GEO basics

What is GEO, actually?

Generative Engine Optimization explained without the jargon — and why it isn't a replacement for SEO.

GEO — Generative Engine Optimization — is the practice of making your site easy for AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Claude, and Google's AI Overviews to read, understand, and cite. That's the whole idea. The jargon around it is new; most of the work is not.

Why the term exists at all

Search is shifting from a list of links to a single synthesized answer. When someone asks an assistant "what's the best tool for X," they often never see a results page — they get a paragraph with a few sources named inline. If you're not one of those named sources, you're invisible, no matter how well you rank.

GEO is the discipline of becoming one of those sources. It exists because the old proxy for visibility — position on a results page — no longer captures where attention actually goes.

GEO is not a replacement for SEO

This is the most common misunderstanding. GEO and SEO share the same foundation:

  • A crawlable, fast, well-structured site.
  • Clear topical authority on subjects you want to be known for.
  • Content that directly answers real questions.

If your SEO is broken — pages that can't be crawled, no structure, thin content — your GEO is broken too. What GEO adds is a second optimization target: being quotable inside an answer, not just rankable on a page. You do both.

What actually moves the needle

Three things matter more than anything else, and none of them are exotic:

1. Machine-readability

Can an AI crawler fetch your pages and parse them without running JavaScript? Many "clean, well-ranked" sites fail here — which is exactly why ChatGPT ignores most business websites.

2. Explicit structure

AI engines lean heavily on structured data and clean headings to confirm what you do. Ambiguity gets skipped.

3. Answer-shaped content

A page written as one long argument is hard to quote. A page built from concise, self-contained sections that each answer a question is easy to lift into an answer.

Where to start

Don't start by rewriting everything. Start by measuring: can AI engines read your site, and do they currently cite you? Fix readiness first, then produce answer-ready content on the topics you want to own. GEO is a loop — measure, fix, publish, measure again — not a one-time checklist.

Frequently asked

Is GEO different from SEO?

Yes and no. GEO shares most of its foundation with SEO — crawlability, clear structure, authority — but optimizes for being quoted inside an AI answer rather than ranked as a blue link. You do both, not one instead of the other.

Do I need special tools for GEO?

You need to know whether AI engines can read your site and whether they actually cite you. That's what a readiness check plus AI-visibility monitoring gives you — the rest is content and structure work you already understand from SEO.
